Ultimax General Replacement Pads

Ultimax is a high friction pad designed for general replacement use on cars, vans and SUV’s (4x4s). Using shimmed, chamfered and slotted technology and incorporating EBC’s unique BRAKE-IN coating for super quick pad bed-in, (in Europe only certain numbers are shimmed, in USA ALL Ultimax range are shimmed).

EBC Brakes black coded brake pads are a high friction premium quality friction material approved to ECE R90 brake safety regulations and as such are an exact equivalent to original equipment pads fitted to your vehicle from the factory – but for far less money.

Don’t let the lower price point cloud your view of this superb quality product, these pads will stop your vehicle as fast as any original equipment pad and faster than most aftermarket pads. One brilliant feature of EBC R90 pads is their ability to completely eliminate brake judder and these pads will actually COMPENSATE for mild brake judder after 300-400 miles of use. Nominal friction co-efficient 0.46 with minimal rotor damage and similar dust to original parts.

Reduced Rotor Wear
Disc wear is reduced by up to 50% with the EBC material compared to more abrasive semi metallics. It is common to replace the rotor with every pad change on some OE parts but with EBC Brakes it is quite common to see one rotor last TWO sets of pad lifetimes, offering significant savings. This does NOT mean that the EBC pads wear quickly either.

Changed to EBC Ultimax pads after excessive wear and dust from OEM pads on my BMW320TD. Ultimax pads bedded in immediately and after several thousand km have been far superior to original BMW pads, e.g smoother & more secure braking, minimal dust, and much, much cheaper than BMW pads. Highly recommend Ultimax.

I installed Yellowstuff pads on front and rear of my car along with the 3GD rotors… Let me tell you, these things do not only STOP you when and where you want them to.., but there is a HUGE difference between stock brakes and these brakes. I can say i stop at least 40% closer than before.. And i had 4 of the latest brakes. I havent even fully slammed on the brakes. I’m afraid to!

I have EBC TurboGroove rotors and EBC ceramic pads on my SAAB 9-3… the improvement over stock is simply awesome; and they were pretty good before!

You can’t really compare them with anything else on the market. The RedStuff still dust the alloys (despite claims they don’t) but it’s much longer between washes and the ceramic dust seems to wash off easier than before.

Seriously impressive!

EBC Brakes Review – Redstuff Ceramic – 3000 Series – For Highly Tuned Cars and Fast Street

As EBC’s flagship street brake pad material for prestige and faster cars above 200BHP the 09 version on EBC Redstuff sets new standards in brake performance. Redstuff has always been known for its low dust ability but the latest blend has greatly reduced the phenomenon of pad “Pick up” or disc scoring and reduced dust even further.

Tested at the UK Motor Industries Research Association (MIRA) in witnessed tests early Redstuff reduced car stopping distance in tests by almost 50 feet from 100 MPH offering a staggering 30% brake improvement.

Redstuff however as a harder compound does take longer to fully bed in to achieve its highest levels of performance (can be up to 1500 miles/2500 Kms urban use) during which time the odd “Chirp” of brake noise may be heard when starting from cold in damp and cold conditions at walking pace speed. One press of the pedal to clear the rotor of any dampness and this disappears to leave EBC Redstuff a brake pad that inspires confidence in all cars. The motto is be patient give the pads a full chance to bed down.

The Complaint

To Whom It May Concern:

I purchased a set of EBC brakes from Summit Racing. My husband called Summit when they had 180 miles on them (exceeding the mileage the instructions indicated for the break in period) about them continuing to squeal like the worn out pads we bought the EBC’s to replace. We were instructed to drive more than 200 miles and call back. We went to vacation at the beach and put another 1000 miles on the brakes and they continue to squeal. When he contacted EBC again, they instructed him to send this email to you as it sounded as if the brakes were defective.

Please contact me as I would like to return the brakes. I can not afford to pay in excess of $200 to continue to have a squealing brakes.

OK Misty, let me give you some news…..

We have been making changes to Red all spring, due to its hardness Red took the longest time of any of our compounds to bed in, up to 1500 miles.


People just wont wait that long.


The latest material is called DM 2026, I bedded this in on my :Lexus GS 300 in 200 miles and it is flawless.


I am making you both front and rear sets in this and will have them you in 10 days, I just need an address and then would really appreciate your feedback


The parts are DP 31764C and DP 31788C

I apologize for not getting back in touch with you sooner regarding the new brakes that you sent. They are SO much better than the previous set. The break in period was about 500 miles. EBC Brakes sport rotors come with wide aperture 3GD series for cooler running. On a global scale Most EBC rotors are made from British castings and 100% of these are precision machined in either the UK or the USA. EBC Brakes has 14 machining centres in these two countries to manufacture these precision parts. Slotted rotors are made from high quality grey iron to exacting standards and undergo extensive testing and rigorous quality control and are then precision machined to your chosen slot or dimple pattern.

The dimple drilled rotor was invented by EBC Brakes back in the 90′s and has been imitated by many because of its ability to offer pad degassing without “Through Drilling” disc or rotor holes which has been shown to promote rotor cracks.

The wide aperture slots on the EBC units actually draw cool air under the brake pad and rotor interface and help cool the temperatures of the pad contact which can shoot up to well over 1000 degrees at the very heart of the brake pad during heavy braking and can cause brake fade or loss of brake effect.

These “Full sweep” slots on the EBC Sport Brake rotor also help remove dirt dust debris and water from the braking area but without doubt the MAIN benefit of such sport rotors is their ability to maintain a flat and parallel pad surface throughout the lifetime of the brake pad set.

I took my car to Pep Boys and rode along with an ASC certified tech to diagnose the problem I have been experiencing. He agreed the problem was most likely from the rear but said he felt a slight vibration in the wheel and uneven pressure in the pedal when coming to a stop as did I. Since I don’t have the time to have the back done and risk having to do the front later if it didn’t cure the problem I decided to do both axles. As it turns out the DTV was the issue, you can call it install run-out or a car problem but the disc thickness was not true from the start. I asked the tech to pull off the discs prior to the on car lathe and inspect the hubs to ensure I had cleaned and prepped the hubs properly. He said they look cleaner than a new hub and didn’t see anything that would indicate an installation problem. Having said that the problem is solved and the car stops as it should with good pedal pressure and no vibration. I would like to thank you for the Pep-Boys recommendation; the cost with tax for both axles was only $92.00! After spending $396.00 for EBC Red-Stuff pads and rotors I don’t think rotors should have to be turned prior to installation but perhaps I’m wrong. Even so, the grand total of $488.00 it is less than half of what Infinity charges for pads and rotors all around, and I am confident that the red stuff pads will provide superior stopping power and longevity in the long. Thanks again for the quick response and advice.

I finally had the opportunity to return to the Pep Boys Brick, NJ location this morning. The service manager, Ed Mckeon, had received the dampers you requested be sent to him and his mechanic used the ProCut machine to cut the 3GD slotted rotors on my vehicle.

The results are, at least today, great! The vibration while braking has disappeared, and the once per rev scraping sound has disappeared. Even Ed commented how smoothly the ProCut gear was able to cut the performance slotted rotors with no problems. I believe this issue is resolved.

It is not an easy decision to replace OEM parts. But how can one argue with 3GD rotors priced at the same cost that Honda would charge for OEM stock replacement? At the end of the day, the difference is literally, night and day. The braking efficiency curve stays ahead of the pedal pressure, thus I brake efficiently and stop earlier than anticipated. With the Honda stock, slippery, dusty, unpredictable, I had to always fiddle with the pressure, often having to add and add. Not these items- they stay cool, brake superbly and, more importantly, they have not even reached the peak efficiency mileage.

The stock brakes wore out after about 50,000 mi. due to hard driving over mountain passes. The EBC slotted/dimpled discs and greenstuff pads were a big improvement over stock, much more powerful and have lasted about 70,000 mi.

An excellent solution for 4×4 use, this heavy duty Greenstuff formulation has slightly lower friction than its 2000 series counterpart (average friction coefficient 0.45mm) but has the benefit of longer life and better resistance to offroad conditions of dust and sand etc. It has an extremely low rotor wear factor and medium-to-good lifetime.

Four years ago I purchased new slotted/dimpled rotors and green stuff pads for the front brakes of my Buick Park Avenue. (I sold it a year later to go overseas.) It was not a sports car, but a great 79.667 mph interstate car. What a serious improvement in stopping power and confidence after adding the EBC rotors and pads. I’m sure they are great for sports cars, but if you drive a large heavy car or SUV, you will never regret replacing your factory (or Chinese made replacement) pads and rotors with the EBC brand. Now I’m returning to the States and in the market for a new (used) Buick – I hope the brakes are worn out on my “new” car so I can immediately install the EBC brakes without feeling wasteful. Highly recommended – a painless way to increase driving pleasure, confidence, and safety.

I bought these set new in the box, right after installation. I took my baby on the highway, and about 30 minutes of riding I blew by a nypd unmarked interceptor he instatly tryed to flag me down. I noticed him drifting behind me trying to catch up to me and I automatically got into race mode, cut threw traffic and with impairitve reaction lost sight from his flashig light…..thank EBC for the HH compound.!!!

All i can say is holy s*&%!!! about a week ago i got my pads and installed the rear set while waiting for my rotors to show up. Even with just the rears changed out to the redstuff pads wow what a big difference! Then just today i finaly got my front rotors (stockers have been warped for about 10-20,000 miles) the install went off with out a hitch. I went out and bedded in the new pads to the rotors and the car now stops on a dime!!! There is a noise like wind rushing through them but all in all i dont care they stop like nothing else and dont screw up your wheels at the same time. I must say EBC knows what they are doing because they are the only ones i trust with my brakes from now on!!!

Wow…I love the EBC brakes! Installation was straight forward and easy. All EBC brake components fits perfectly. The directions for the “break-in” process was easy to follow. I didn’t have any brake noise (squeaks) during or after the break-in period, though I was expecting some noise as it’s a normal occurance for high performance   brakes. Stopping power is incredibly strong and fade-free, especially for my heavily modified vehicle which is   extremely heavy. The EBC brakes pads also don’t produce much brake dust if any at all. Overall I’m very pleased with the EBC brakes and would highly recommend any of their EBC brake products.

These are extra high in friction but still an organic pad for use on all types of rotors.

In considering which pads to use for downhill work it is essential to understand your own brake system. Some hydraulic systems, such as those made by Magura use fluid lines made from nylon or plastic and can be prone to softening and swell if overheated. For this reason Magura and others are not too keen on using pads in their systems that generate too much heat such as sintered pads.

If Downhill if your riding sport EBC red grade pads will be a great choice, lifetime being quite short but great brakes, low rotor damage and minimal heat transfer into the bikes hydraulics is to be considered.

If you down intend to make Alpine downhill mountain bike riding or racing your daily buzz, sintered pads have significant benefits and lets face it, fore every one of us that races downhill there are 5000 that want value for money ,long pad life and do not race downhill, lets read the next section about sintered brakes for MTB disc systems.

Absolutely the best pads I have used. Some pads have a distinct heat range that works best, these are perfectly happy with any temperature. From freezing rain initial stops to 100 deg F ambient after a 10 minute steep run, these pads perform flawlessly. Better power, modulation and heat capacity than oem with similar wear rate to oem non-metallic pads. Have cooked both oem metallic and non on a certain local trail and have yet to cook these on the same trail with the same brake setup.
