Brakes are not an area to look for cheap products. If you are in the market to buy brakes for your vehicle there is plenty of choice but price should not be the driving factor. Things to consider are

1) Are the brakes you are looking at a good quality

2) Are you about to buy brakes that are suited to your car or motorcycle

3) Are you about to buy brakes that are ECE R 90 approved or TUV tested for motorcycles

4) Where were the brakes you are about to buy made and is that a reliable producers product

There are many questions the consumer needs to get answers for before you buy brakes and these are just some of them.

EBC Brakes is one such quality producer and produces 100% of its automotive brakes in the UK in ISO 9000 and BS 5750 approved facilities and have an excellent warranty and service record. EBC also make the largest range of brakes in the world so if you are looking to buy brakes you will not find your choice made much easier than that.

When you buy brakes you also need to decide who and how these will be fitted. EBC Brakes can provide DVD instructions on how to install brakes and all the necessary peripherals such as brake fluid, brake discs and all types of pads that can be selected from this brake selector chart , brake caliper lube, brake fluid testers and brake fluid one man bleeding kits to make the job easy for you at home.

Its not just where you buy brakes it’s a question of what quality of brakes you get for your money and these days, price does not always command quality and neither does a famous brand names. Many well established large and famous companies insert low cost aftermarket parts into their boxes and some have no idea what product is even going into the boxes.

AT EBC we make everything we sell, we research and design our own materials, we have them tested in the UK by the VCA for fitness for purposes and we guarantee them so when you come to buy brakes ask for a brand you can trust.

Racing requires much higher quality of brake components than normal street use. The Brakes need to be able to handle heat better, last longer, stop faster and not to damage the opposing surfaces or discs/rotors. EBC Oversize MX disc kits and MXS or EPFA disc pads have been a massive success with privateers.

EBC Brakes specialises in brakes for racing for all kinds of vehicles ranging from mountain bike race brakes to motorcycle and ATV race brakes and up to brakes for racing in cars.

Mountain Bike downhill racing brakes were pioneered by EBC brakes in the early days with Hope Technology and were developed by world Champion Steve Peat. The EBC Red grade of Mountain bike brakes for racing are detailed here… Mountain Bike brakes.

Motocross brakes for racing by EBC have been universally adopted by top professionals around the world and encouraged EBC Brakes to be a co sponsor of the USA Supercross series. The most used material for race use on Moto X bikes is the MXS series sintered pad or the new EPFA Extreme Pro sintered race grade pads.

Superbike Racing was another area EBC developed and dominated in the earlier years with its initiation of the Superstock series designed for spec changes only on Street based high engine size superbikes. This led to the development of the EBC sintered pad range including the EPFA Extreme Pro Grade and the latest and great EBC Brakes sintered GPFA range.

Brakes for Racing used on cars in closed circuit full race and trackday events is another area where EBC Brakes had a lot to offer such as the Yellowstuff grade pads for lighter cars which has been used by almost every entrant of the UK Miata series in 2010 and 2011 including the series winners and the new Bluestuff NDX trackday and race pads.

When considering brakes for racing there is no SINGLE solution and in 2011 EBC was put to the test to develop a race compound for the all conquering Nissan Skyline GTR which with its massive rotors, wide wheels limiting the airflow to the brake discs, low mass (being a hub and bell unit) of iron into which to dissipate heat this called for fresh ideas from the R and D team at EBC Brakes and the optimum race brakes designed were the new EBC Orangestuff range, due for launch as the first full brakes for racing from EBC in September 2011.

Early tests of the new Orangestuff EBC compound has shown higher friction and reduced fade compared to even the Bluestuff NDX grade on faster cars. EBC Orangestuff is however a race only material and not suitable for highway use, neither is it ECE R 90 approved or ever likely to be. Orangestuff is purely a brake pad for race use.

For MOTORCYCLES…

Race brakes for motorcycles feature the newly launched GPFA sintered series that have blown away many riders at Daytona 2011 and continue to impress every race team that tried them. The new race brakes known as GPFA are made of a special copper alloy produced by a special sintering process that grips from cold right up to racing temperatures with zero brake fade.

The GPFA series are however NOT for highway use as they are simply too high in friction for street use and for Motorcyclists wishing to ride to the track, enjoy some track riding and then safely commute home the optimum choice will be the new EPFA sintered superbike series which has all the in depth stopping power of its stable mate GPFA series but is not quite so sharp on first application making it more predictable and safe for standard street tyres , surfaces and riding styles.

For MOTOX bikes…

The ever trusty EBC series MXS sintered pads are tough to beat and feature a special high friction sintered alloy compound with diamond ground surface finish and arrive complete with external hex drive slider pins in most cases (where originally fitted with internal hexagons pins)

For SUPERMOTO…

EBC Brakes have some fantastic solutions including the new oversize beefed up 320mm Supermoto brake rotor kits complete with relocation brackets and ultra lightweight contoured rotor blades.
Manufacturing the worlds largest range of brake pads, EBC has progressed in leaps and bounds over recent years with its technology especially in the performance market and is now firmly number one in performance brake pads in many categories.

EBC has a solution for pretty much most applications. See this chart for how to choose your ideal race or trackday brakes.

EBC Brakes Selector Chart

Impreza or EVO fast street and Trackday – Great results with Yellowstuff Brake Pads or the new Bluestuff NDX Brake Pads for track-day and race use. Bluestuff needs bedding in properly, it’s a much harder pad than the yellow grade.

Historic cars – EBC has this by the ears, higher friction pads that act almost like a servo boost enhance braking on classic cars in race use, Yellowstuff Brake Pads works best.

Superbikes in Trackday or Road race use. Nothing will out brake the new EBC GPFA formula and that’s a promise EBC will under-write. The GPFA range are strictly for track use and simply too grippy for normal highway use and tyres. If you’re serious about track-day riding or are an accomplished road racer, try the EBC new GPFA range sintered pads and you will be amazed, read this Blog from the Pr1mo racing team…

Road Racing Brakes by EBC Stun UK road race team and beat the pants off Brembo carbons according to Pr1mo Racing

EBC makes 100% of its own pads in its factories in Bristol UK or in Ohio USA and is the largest provider of OEM sintered pads outside Japan.

If you haven’t tried EBC Brakes new generation materials, then its time to re think what we can do. EBC is a Company driven by race car and bike enthusiasts. Our Automotive Manager is an accomplished race driver, his assistant a race Marshall and rally navigator, the bike department is managed by people who have owned enough bikes to fill a small dealership, going right back to the 1950s when current EBC owner Andy Freeman started his career in Motorcycling. In the USA our MC tech guru Garry Gallagher is a Hodaka weekend rider and Trackday man through and through, sure he doesn’t win many GPs but understanding bikes is our business across the whole company

Best Race brakes, best trackday brakes and best brakes for roadracing, that’s what we offer at EBC.

A separate article for bedding in motorcycle brakes can be seen here:

BEDDING IN NEW MOTORCYCLE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS

Bedding in new brakes is extremely important especially if you are using your vehicle for performance use on a track event.

First remember the harder or longer lasting a pad is the longer the geometric bedding process will take. By Geometric we mean making the pads sit flat or seat on a full width contact against the rotors. No matter how flat your rotors look, there are always misalignment issues with calipers, pads and rotors when installing new pads.

Also if your rotors have not been turned or are not completely new, no matter how nice they look there will be a hollow patch in the rotor and possibly minor ribs on the edges of the rotors developed from prior driving.

The picture below shows a rotor where the pads are not completely bedded and the contact band in blue is typical of a pad only contacting on a small area. Until this blue band is ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE ROTOR the pads are not ready for full performance or race use. If you can do this pre bedding OFF the track it is ideal to minimise loss of track time.

Once bedded geometrically and full width contact band is evident (can take anything up to 300 miles), give the brakes a workout along these lines.

1) Brake firmly on a safe road area where it is safe to do so from 70 to 30 MPH 10 times in succession.

(The brakes may smell hot and some smoke may even be seen from the wheels and some vibration may occur. This is simply the pads telling you that they cannot hold on the disc as they are not fully bedded in and contact is not sufficient. The grab and release action causes vibration. It SHOULD go away when bedding is complete and if it doesn’t you may have steering geometry issues and should read this page…

Solve Brake Vibration

2) Do not during the bedding process bring the car to a complete rest and park it unless in an emergency, try to keep the wheels turning if only slowly. Parking when rotors very hot would damage both the rotors and pads due to heat soak.

3) Allow the brake to cool down with a gentle drive and then completely cool to touch cold.

4) Repeat the procedure under 1) again.

The brake pedal should have become firmer and the brakes more responsive.

5) Drive the car for up to 50 miles braking normally to get rid of any blue marks or hot spot.

On the track, first time out brake WELL AHEAD of normal braking markers and gradually assess braking points.

Gradually extend your braking markers as you feel more confident that the brakes are working well.

6) Inspect the pads for heavy surface cracks and wear every 20-30 laps and especially before driving home after a hard session on the track.

Hope this helps guys!

Phil puts it down to regular 6 weekly maintenance of the vehicle, riding the lorry in a careful way and always using the hand brake at lights and not relying on the lorry clutch. This is his second lorry and has lasted him for a stunning seven and a half years, a great achievement!
